Businessman and Fisherman
One day, a fisherman lay on a beautiful beach. His fishing pole rested in the sand, his line cast into the sparkling blue surf. He enjoyed the soft warmth of the sun and the simple hope of catching a fish.
A businessman in a sharp suit walked down the beach, trying to shake off the stress of his workday.
He saw the fisherman and couldn’t understand why the man was relaxing instead of working harder to support his family.
“You aren’t going to catch many fish that way,” the businessman said. “You should be working rather than lying on the beach!”
The fisherman looked up, smiled, and asked, “And what will my reward be?”
“Well, you can get bigger nets and catch more fish,” the businessman replied.
“And then what will my reward be?” the fisherman asked, still smiling.
“You’ll make money and buy a boat. That will lead to larger catches,” the businessman said.
“And then what will my reward be?” the fisherman repeated.
The businessman’s irritation grew. “You can buy a bigger boat and hire people to work for you!”
“And then what will my reward be?” the fisherman asked again.
The businessman’s face turned red with anger. “Don’t you understand? You can build a fleet of fishing boats, sail the world, and let your employees catch fish for you!”
Once more, the fisherman asked, “And then what will my reward be?”
The businessman was furious now. “You can become so rich that you’ll never have to work again! You can spend your days sitting on this beach, watching the sunset without a care in the world!”
The fisherman, still smiling, replied, “And what do you think I’m doing right now?”
The Moral
True contentment and happiness often come from appreciating the simple pleasures in life, not from chasing wealth and material success.
Ambition is good, but it’s worth pausing to consider what truly brings you joy. We are all built differently.
