Politics and Religion
Sometimes I am someone people do not want at a dinner party.
Well, okay, “most” times.
But I have really tried to pull back and realize not everyone can handle discussing complicated topics like religion and politics without getting some feathers ruffled.
So, don’t let your alligator mouth write a check your hummingbird ass can’t cash.
In other words, shooting off at the mouth before you have thought about what you’re going to say is likely to get you in trouble. And when it comes time to pay the piper, if you can’t back up your statements, you’re going to get your ass beat.
Sound familiar (-Go to story teller southern voice)? The way we interact now over these topics is pretty extreme.
Avoid it and it will go away
I may also have been born with three speeds: on, off, and don’t push your luck.
But, I don’t think that’s the right way to handle most things.
People need to know how to distance themselves emotionally so they can think rationally and discuss calmly.
However this skill is rare because we hardly uplift character through education; it is just intellect that gets trained.
“Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn’t mean politics won’t take an interest in you.”
– Pericles (perhaps) or Thucydides (maybe) A Greek Guy, basically.
Or here is what Plato said in summary:
“If you don’t study politics, you will be ruled by the fools that do.”
– Plato
2,500 years ago and here we are.
Many people in power that do not know their ass from their elbow. I wrote about how Diminishing Intelligence and this defiantly can apply to avoiding tough topics.
Why We Should
Engaging in tough conversations about religion and politics can feel like trying to juggle flaming torches—it’s risky but doable with the right skills.
By learning to keep our cool and think before we speak, we can avoid turning dinner parties into battlegrounds. Plus, fostering emotional intelligence and character alongside intellect can help us bridge divides and create a more united world.
Remember, dodging these topics won’t make them go away; it just leaves the discussion to the loudest (and often least informed) voices.
